    A month in…

So we’re a month in. We’ve been in a total of 4 places in that month. Certainly slow travel. Here’s four things we’ve done and noticed. There are SOOO many families travelling Sri Lanka and SOO many families doing the long-term travel thing. We still have to play Mum and Dad, and the kids still play the [insert relevant adjective here] kids. We are sooo lucky, and like at home, often forget it. Hiriketiya may have ruined Sri Lanka for a few people. “Travel is so much more than the seeing of sights; it is the change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the philosophy of living” Mirian Beard…

5 mistakes resulting in a hospital admission: lessons learned for managing dehydration in kids whilst travelling in a developing country.

This is a confronting piece for us to write and share. This is a full disclosure post. All of our mistakes outlined, what we’ve learnt and how you might avoid a similar situation. If this post helps just one family avoid the situation we were faced with it will be worth reliving the heartache. We are not medically trained, all we have is our lived experience to share. Mid January 2019 our family of 5 left Australia for Sri Lanka to commence a planned year of travelling through South East Asia. With 3 daughters under 5, we had taken the time to have extensive consultations with a specialised travel doctor…

Sri Lanka Week 1: In search of the Small Lane.

Well, our plan was to settle; and then launch.  We haven’t quite ‘launched’ yet! Needless to say, like any well planned coaching move, it hasn’t quite been executed as well as we would have dreamed it to.  If we’re half way through the first quarter, then we still haven’t settled. We didn’t expect to necessarily, but hoped to. It didn’t happen.  It happens. We most definitely scored, maybe a goal, most definitely a few behinds. We’re looking forward to quarter time. We hope that’s what Hiri (Hiriketiya Beach) is about – a quarter time break to assess.   Highlights and Lowlights We start off with Highlights and Lowlights. If you…

Why Sri Lanka? In summing up…it’s the vibe

As news of our plan to travel out of Australia with our young family spreads from family to friends and acquaintances, one of the questions most commonly asked is “How did you choose Sri Lanka?” “Because we love it” I lamely reply. The truth is, up until writing this down, I have not had the time to articulate the exact reasons why we chose Sri Lanka other than it feels right for us as the place to start our adventure as a family of 5. In summing up…it’s the vibe, and…no that’s it…it’s the vibe. I rest my case. (Dennis Denuto, The Castle) Our first experience in Sri Lanka was…

What I want for my girls (and other reasons to travel…)

Some people say 3 kids overseas is crazy.  I agree I started this post as a private reflection, but half way through realised that it was probably the perfect post to begin my contribution towards our sharing of our experiences raising our three girls and living out of Australia for a year.  There are three reasons why we have decided to take The Small Lane in 2019. Reason 1) My adult daughters Lisa and I have a plan to do something similar with our family every 10 years – allowing us to commit fully to our communities/roots in the meantime – yet still cultivating experiences that allow our family…

How do you eat an elephant? Our plan to get to Sri Lanka in 2019.

“How do you even start to plan a trip like that?” A friend asked.  “Booking our flights” I responded, which seemed like an obvious place for us to start.  As the analogy goes, the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. That, and ensuring that our workplaces/families and friends in our small community were aware and supportive of us both taking 1 year’s leave without pay from our respective positions.  It’s amazing what can be achieved with little actions and celebrating them along the way. Yesterday we booked flights (well it was in March but you get the drift), today I got approval from work…

Confirmed: Our family of 5 have one way tickets to Sri Lanka for January 2019!

We have 5 tickets. We are content, comfortable, and secure in our home.  Yet we have 5 tickets. When an AirAisa sale appeared on the March long weekend, we jumped in at the deep end and booked one way tickets to Sri Lanka for January 2019.  In less than 7 months we will be living abroad with our 3 children under 5.  Holy Hell, we are just a little bit excited.  As Adam would say: “I think I just did a little wee.” Life doesn’t get much more chaotic than the juggle of 3 kids under 5, so why not move the chaos. We love our home, our jobs, our family and…
